What is Q-Day
Every wallet is locked with elliptic-curve math. On Solana your public key is your address. Everyone can see it.
A big enough quantum computer runs Shor's algorithm and works backwards from any public key to its private key.
Every coin. Every seed phrase. Every "not your keys" tweet. Gone. Except what never relied on that math.
What survives Q-Day
Elliptic curves break on Q-Day. Hash-based signatures don't. No curves, just SHA-256, the most boring and battle-tested math in crypto. Here's the whole trick:
- Make secrets
Generate a pile of random numbers. Hash each one with SHA-256. Publish the hashes. That's the public key.
- Sign
To sign a message, reveal some of the secret numbers. The message decides which ones.
- Verify
Anyone hashes the revealed numbers and checks they match. Forging one means running SHA-256 backwards. Quantum computers can't do that either.
